1. Overview

Poople (“we,” “us,” or “our”) operates the website at pooplegame.com and the Poople browser extension. Poople is a free daily word ladder game that runs entirely in your browser. You do not need an account to play, and we are committed to collecting as little personal data as possible.

This Privacy Policy explains what limited information we handle, how we use it, and your rights. It covers both the website and the browser extension.

2. The Short Version

  • You can play Poople without signing in or creating an account.
  • Your game progress, streaks, and statistics are saved in your own browser using local storage, and they stay on your device.
  • The browser extension does not collect, store, or transmit any personal data. All extension data stays on your device.
  • We use a privacy-focused, cookieless analytics tool (Umami) to understand overall traffic. It does not identify you.
  • After you finish a daily puzzle, your browser sends us a small anonymous result record. This does not happen in unlimited mode, and Section 4 lists the exact fields it contains. The record carries no IP address, account ID, or other identifier, so we cannot connect it to you, and a toggle on the results screen lets you turn it off at any time.
  • We display ads on the website through Google AdSense.
  • We do not sell your data, and we do not run cross-site tracking beyond what our analytics and advertising vendors require.

3. The Poople Browser Extension

The Poople browser extension is designed to let you play the daily Poople puzzle from your browser toolbar.

What the extension does not do:

  • It does not collect, store, or transmit any personal data.
  • It does not track your browsing activity on other websites.
  • It does not communicate with any external server to record your game activity.

What the extension stores locally:

Game progress, your current streak, and statistics for the daily puzzle are saved in your browser’s local storage. This data never leaves your device and is not accessible to us.

The extension requires no account and no sign-in to function.

4. Information We Collect on the Website

Game Data (stored on your device): Your puzzle progress, win history, current streak, best streak, and average score are stored in your browser using local storage. This data never leaves your device and is not transmitted to our servers. Clearing your browser data removes it.

Daily Puzzle Result Data (anonymous): When you finish a daily puzzle, your browser sends a result record to our own server and we store it in our database. This does not happen when you play in unlimited mode. The record contains exactly six fields: the puzzle number, the number of moves you used, the par for that puzzle, how many moves over par you took, the number of invalid guesses you made, and the time in milliseconds from your first input to your solve. If a solve takes longer than two hours, we leave the duration blank for that record. We do not send or store your IP address, browser user agent, a session identifier, an account or user ID, a cookie, your streak, or your country or region. Because the record carries none of these identifiers, we cannot connect it to any other record you have sent, we do not attempt to identify you from it, and we cannot count how many people play, only how many puzzles have been solved. A toggle on the results screen lets you turn this off at any time. It is on by default, and turning it off still lets you see everyone else’s aggregate results.

Site Analytics Data (anonymous): We use Umami, a privacy-focused analytics tool, to measure aggregate traffic such as page views, approximate region, referrer, and device type. Umami is cookieless and does not collect personal information or build a profile of you. The data we see is aggregate and anonymous.

Advertising: We display ads through Google AdSense. Google AdSense may use cookies and similar technologies to show relevant ads based on your prior visits to this site and other sites. You can opt out of personalized advertising by visiting Google’s Ads Settings. Google’s privacy policy is available at https://policies.google.com/privacy.

Technical Data (server logs): Our hosting provider, Cloudflare, automatically records standard request information such as IP address, browser type, and access timestamps. These logs are used for security, abuse prevention, and performance, and are handled by Cloudflare on our behalf.

We do not ask for your name or email to play. The only time you would share contact details is if you choose to email us or use our support form.

5. How We Use Information

We use the limited information described above to:

  • Run and maintain the game and keep it secure.
  • Understand overall usage so we can improve the puzzle, the interface, and performance.
  • Serve ads that help cover the cost of running the free service.
  • Prevent abuse, spam, and automated attacks.
  • Respond to messages you send us through support or email.

We do not use your information for automated decision-making that affects you.

6. Local Storage and Your Game Data

Poople saves your progress in your browser’s local storage so you can keep your streak between visits. A few things to know:

  • The data is tied to the specific browser and device you play on, so it does not sync across devices.
  • We cannot see this data, and it is not backed up by us.
  • If you clear your browser storage, use private browsing, or switch devices, your stats will not carry over.
  • Your browser also keeps a small flag noting which daily puzzles you already reported a result for (see Section 4), so the same solve is not sent twice. This flag lives in the same local storage the game already uses for your progress.

7. Cookies and Tracking

The core Poople game, our analytics tool (Umami), and the daily puzzle result record described in Section 4 are all designed to work without tracking cookies. However, Google AdSense may place cookies on your device to serve and measure ads. These cookies are set by Google, not by us, and are governed by Google’s privacy policy.

Your browser may also store local data for game progress, your theme preference, and the daily puzzle reporting flag described in Section 6. This stays on your device and is not used to track you across other websites.

8. Third-Party Services

We rely on a small number of service providers to run the game:

The daily puzzle result data described in Section 4 is not processed by Umami, Google AdSense, or by any other provider listed above.

We do not sell or rent your personal data to anyone, and we do not share it except as needed to operate the service or to comply with the law.

9. Data Retention

Game progress and streaks saved in your browser stay there until you clear them. Daily puzzle result records, described in Section 4, are stored in our database and kept to calculate aggregate statistics such as the distribution of moves and the typical solve time. Server logs collected by Cloudflare are retained for a short period for security and operational purposes and then expire. Aggregate analytics data contains no personal information and may be kept to track long-term trends.

10. Your Rights

Depending on where you live, you may have rights under the GDPR, CCPA, or similar laws, including the right to access, correct, or delete personal data we hold about you. Because Poople does not require an account and stores game progress only on your device, we hold very little personal data about any individual. You can remove your local game data at any time by clearing your browser storage.

11. Children’s Privacy

Poople is a general-audience word game and does not knowingly collect personal data from children. Because the game works without an account and does not require any personal information to play, children can enjoy it without us gathering identifying data. Note that Google AdSense may serve ads to general audiences; we do not configure it to target children specifically. If you believe a child has sent us personal information through our support form or email, contact us and we will delete it.

12. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes to the service or legal requirements. When we make material changes, we will update the date at the top of this page. Your continued use of Poople after an update means you accept the revised policy.
